A 28-year-old man was yesterday released on $500,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Zafar Khan allegedly drove motor pick-up GSS 9553 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of 82-year-old Keturah Dalgetty on May 3, at Fifth Street, Second Avenue Block ‘Y’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and had his driver’s license suspended. As a condition of bail, Khan was ordered to report to the Golden Grove Police Station weekly.
An attorney for the defendant told the court that his client is a single parent of a four-year-old girl.
He will make his next court appearance on May 24.
According to reports, the elderly woman who resided at Lot 215 Samatta Point, Grove EBD was struck down after the defendant was reportedly reversing on the access road. It was reported that Dalgetty fell to the ground and was run over by the vehicle.
According to reports, the driver, after realizing he had hit something, came out of the vehicle and found the woman lying on the road in an unconscious state.
Dalgetty was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
