Under the theme ‘50 teams, One day, One winner’ the annual Fustal indoor five-a-side Knockout Football competition organised by C&A Unique in collaboration with South Quake Youth Ministries was held on Thursday night
at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall as part of Guyana’s Jubilee events, promised plenty of action.
The ‘Arrival day’ event, dubbed ‘the Church versus the Street’ saw only 20 teams participating with most of the Church teams showing very little faith in God’s ability to provide them with the skills to compete against players who have been playing ‘small goal’ football in the Streets since they could walk.
Co-Organizer and President of South Quake Youth Ministries, Alistair Griffith, said some of the Churches who failed to show up might have been intimidated by the Street teams. But he expressed satisfaction with the one-day competition which concluded with the Male final which was witnessed by a small gathering.
“I am pleased that we have achieved most of what we set out to do and that the standard of play in both Male and Female finals was very high. This was our first venture at the Sports Hall,” Griffith disclosed.
“Of course we had a few glitches which we have learned from and I can’t wait for next year’s tournament,” Griffith added.
Ironically, it was a Church team which captured the title as Titans got past Tucville Street side 6-5 on penalty shootout after the exciting 14-minute encounter end 1 all at full time.
After each of the five players from both sides had scored, Titan’s Dwayne McLennan netted the winning goal in a game with saw fast paced and aggressive football with neither team dominating the other.
By the seven-minute halftime whistle the score line was nil-all. The second half saw desperate attempts to score by both and just when it seemed the would end scoreless, Jermaine Tinch put Tucville ahead when he found the back of the net in the last minute.
But Amias Benjamin clung on to faith like Job in the Bible and scored the equalizer with 20 seconds remaining in the match.
Champions Titans collected a trophy and $50,000 for their work, while Tucville took home $25,000 and a trophy as the runner up. Baller FC, another Church team gained a walk over to finish third and take home $15,000 and a trophy, while Young Warriors ended in the fourth position and received $10,000.
In the ladies final, it was the clash of two Church teams and Prayer Warriors defeated Amazing Grace 2-nill.
