May 07, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor,
Continued blessings on your great newsworthy newspaper.
You do an excellent service for us in Region 11, that makes me feel that I am in Guyana as I daily read your publication. With tongue in cheek I would say that sometimes the letters to the editor are the ‘news of the day’.
Two letters in your issue of May 4th 2016, to wit,
1) Still questions about Joe Harmon by Emile Mervin
2) Volda Lawrence should not continue as a Minister by
Drupattie Singh, Diaspora Member (New York),
caught my attention as necessary to keep up the pressure for improved responses from the government. However I doubt if there would ever be clear, sensible, reasonable and purposeful actions by the government given the practiced behaviour of all past governments in Guyana.
And what is that practiced behaviour?
Simply ignore, won’t talk about it, become deaf and blind, and if backed into a no escape corner, gruffly mutter that the matter was satisfactorily dealt with and is governed by confidentiality!
All and sundry know that Harmon’s behaviour was totally inappropriate and embarrassing, and that the forced proffered explanations were flimsy, masked and full of holes. The debate here is whether he is keeping secrets and for whom? The party policy is probably that nothing untoward was done by him. So let sleeping dogs lie as is the practiced behaviour of all past Guyana governments.
Now to the Volda Lawrence issue.Ditto for that practiced behaviour adumbrated above. As Drupattie Singh wrote, in a real government she “would have had to step down plus extend an apology”. That is a fact except where ‘practiced behaviour’ takes dominance.
I suspect that President Granger is a clone of Desmond Hoyte and all too soon a sobriquet will find its way in the press to match his demeanor and administration. Perhaps he is being too soft.
I used to be upset at the ‘Desmond Persaud’ title, which I felt to be inappropriate for I knew Mister Hoyte to be a cultured intelligent man who worked for the benefit of all guyanese.
I knew the sibblings of David Granger as being determined and purposeful and many a time fearless. People in authority have to act and be fearless. They cannot please all but their purpose must be clear that inappropriate behaviour is unacceptable. Watch my words for that possible title emerging for President Granger!
