Dragsters from neighbouring Dutch territory Suriname are aiming to make things real difficult for local competitors when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club host its ‘Golden Jubliee’ Meet on May 15, at the South Dakota Circuit.
This is according to word emanating from Suriname that will be sending a large contingent to battle the Guyanese dragsters for supremacy in what is anticipated to provide a nerve tingling exhibition of raw speed.
Guyana’s Anand Ramchand and the Daby brothers Rondell and Peter will have to pull out all the stops to keep the Dutch at bay according to early reports, but there is no doubt they possess the machines and fortitude to do so.
The Surinamese will be led by the experienced Hans Ijzer whose GMC Typhoon is no stranger to Guyana and a machine that every local dragster respects and his support will come from Ashton Ceyaram, who pilots a Toyota Chaser, Ruifan Chen (Honda Integra), Prakash Lachman (Toyota Supra), Micheal Namchand (RX7), (Navin Lalbiharie (Nissan 350Z), Jean-Paul Jose (Ford Cobra Jet) Lester Choi (Nova) and Vidyakoemar Soekhoe (Mitsubishi Evo).
They will also be represented in the Superbike category by Tom Gomperts (Suzuki GSX R) and Giovanni Slagveer astride a similar machine.
The Porta Tree Timing System which is equipped with specialized starting lights that allow quarter mile speeds to be recorded will be used during the day’s races.
Races commence at 09:00 hrs and admission for adults is $1,000, $500 children, while children under-12 and vehicles are free.
