Buxton United notched their third win of the Stag Elite League Finale when they edged 10-man Monedderlust 3-2 on Thursday evening last at the Leonora Track and Field Football Field, while Georgetown Football Club
(GFC) recorded just their second point in 12 matches when they held Pele to a 1-1 draw.
Contesting the feature match, GFC could have very well recorded their first win of the Finale but buckled under pressure in the final five minutes of the match which allowed Pele the equalizer, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant tucking in the goal in the 86th minute.
GFC had taken the lead five minutes to the half way mark when Keron Solomon’s shot rocked the back of the nets to stun Pele. The Bourda boys defended very well in the remaining minutes of the first half and second half but were not able to hold on for the win.
Buxton put together their third win of the season having already suffered 7 losses while stringing together two draws.
Eson Hamer sent the East Demerara side ahead in the 21st minute. Monedderlust, flying the flag of Berbice in this inaugural league found themselves a man less in the 30th minute when Selwyn Jack was ejected for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
Buxton soon celebrated the advantage when Denvor Dennis doubled the advantage two minutes after the red card. But Monedderlust showed admirable fight when they reduced Buxton’s lead to one goal five minutes before the break.
Delbert Wilson was the man on target for the West Berbice based team. The second half motored on with Buxton desperately trying to restore the two goal cushion which they achieved in the 62nd minute thanks to Rondell Assanah’s strike.
It was not yet over however as Monedderlust against fired back to narrow the advantage, Akimo Watts rocking the nets in the 76th minute. The game soon ended with Buxton taking full points to move to 11 points in the standings while the losers remained on 6 suffering their 8th loss.
Matches continued last evening at the same venue when Alpha United matched skills with the GDF and Slingerz opposed Fruta Conquerors.
