Kurt Thomas who claimed that he never held a gun in his life was charged on Friday for the fatal shooting and stabbing to death of Parika fuel dealer Seeram Singh.
“I’m innocent. I never hold a gun in my life; I never shot nobody!” Thomas shouted in protest as the officers led him from the Leonora Police Station. Once in the compound, Thomas of Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo, called “Deportee”, proclaimed his innocence loudly. He insisted that he was wrongfully accused.
It is alleged that on April 30, last, at Essequibo, Thomas murdered Seeram Singh during a robbery. He was not required to plead to the charge for the capital offence of murder.
The prosecution requested more time since further investigations are ongoing. Kurt told Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool that he was in the lockups for 72 hours and “The police never told me what they picked me up for”.
The Magistrate informed him about the court system. “First there are the charges then a preliminary inquiry, then a trial. That’s just how it works.”
According to reports, 52-year-old Singh of Lot 40 Parika Outfall, East Bank Essequibo, was shot twice, once in his back before his attacker escaped with his jewellery.
Kaieteur News understands that the slain man’s girlfriend who was in custody in connection with the murder was released yesterday.
According to reports, Singh was walking along the roadway at Parika Outfall when a man came up from behind and shot him to his back.
After the businessman fell, the shooter reportedly stood over him and shot him to his chest and head before taking away some of his jewellery.
A .32 live round and a bullet casing of similar caliber were found at the scene.
According to information received, the killer only took Singh’s gold chains, even though the businessman had his wallet and cell phone, and was wearing gold rings when he was killed.
There are suggestions that the businessman’s death may have been a “hit” which was planned to look like a robbery.
Police arrested the victim’s ex-lover, who had allegedly threatened to kill him after he had dumped her and started seeing other women.
Police sources have confirmed that when Singh was killed, he was speaking to the same woman on his phone.
According to the source, the woman told the police that she did not hear the gunshots but heard the businessman screaming on the other end of the line.
The businessman’s daughter, Shavita Singh, had said that her father was at home but left when his ex-lover called him on his cellular phone.
She related that she and the woman had several heated verbal exchanges in the past. The daughter alleged that a male relative of the woman had also threatened to kill her father.
A few days ago, the businessman and two of his workers were taken to the police station after the woman and her daughter accused him of stealing a welding plant. That matter was discharged.
The father of five operated a cargo boat which took fuel into the interior.
