Under a new format of voting and selection, the 2015 National Sports Commission Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday night last at the National Cultural Centre where it was revealed that International Motor Racer Kristian Jeffery and Athlete Alisha Fortune are the 2015 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

Some sixteen (16) winners were announced using the new format which according to Director of Sport Christopher Jones who gave an overview of the awards, is one that is much more transparent.
He noted that it’s the “dawn of a new era”, which will see athletes treated with greater respect, fairly and recognized for their contributions and sacrifices to the nation.
To resounding applause from the audience which included a number of students, Jones announced that representation will be made to the Minister within the Ministry of Education Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, Honorable Nicolette Henry MP to ensure that exceptional athletes are provided with house lots with provision and access to healthcare and scholarships to the University of Guyana become reality.
He also noted that this year would not pass without the long overdue National Sports Policy becoming reality apart from efforts being made to have the stands at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence being renamed in honour of the nation’s outstanding cricketers.
Minister Henry, who joined the activity while it was in progress having taken time out from Wednesday night’s important sitting of the National Assembly, congratulated all the awardees while reminding that her government was proud of them and committed to sustaining sports and its development in Guyana.
Sportsman of the Year Jeffrey achieved the feat having won the champion driver award at last year’s Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) while the multi talented Sportswoman of the Year Fortune, excelled at the World Masters Championships in France when she copped gold in the women’s 100m, 200m and 400m races competing in the 40-45 age-group category.
A panel of seven judges from across the three counties deliberated over the nominations in the various categories that were submitted by the 42 association/federations under the NSC umbrella.
The only two categories that were decided prior to Wednesday night were the Male and Female Athlete with Disability as Calvin Thomas and Deandre David were the only nominees in the respective categories.
Custom made NSC trophies made in the USA were presented to each winner, a new standard set by the NSC going forward. At the end of the ceremony, Jones announced on behalf of Minister Henry that the awardees would all receive an all expenses paid trip to the Majestic Kaieteur Falls compliments of the Sports Ministry.
