Dear Editor,
Subject: Response to article “Waiting in vain to travel on the Essequibo River” Dated Saturday, April 2, 2016,
The Amalgamated Transport & General Workers Union has read the above captioned article, a complaint in the Kaieteur News Paper dated Saturday 02nd April, 2016.
The Union rejects in the strongest possible terms that this anonymous writer or concerned citizen even had such an experience on Good Friday, March 25, 2016 travelling from Parika to Supenaam on the Transport & Harbours Department Ferry Service.
Firstly, by the anonymous writer’s own admission it was stated that he/she was travelling with a vehicle, had arrived at Parika Stelling at 12:30 am on the morning of Good Friday for a Ferry scheduled to leave at 05:00 hours, and were the sixth (6th) vehicle in line to travel. At 3:45 hours was told “You cannot go on the boat” but minutes later fifteen(15) to twenty (20) vehicles passed and boarded the Ferry.
Secondly, the anonymous writer did not say whether the first five (5) vehicles in the line was allowed to travel and in addition he/she was told to wait, which can be interpreted to mean that none of the other vehicles that were there early were allowed to travel on the Ferry.
Thirdly, even if fifteen (15) to twenty (20) vehicles passed him/her while in the line that amount of vehicles will take up less than half of the space on the Ferry which is far below the required amount. So he/she must now tell us where the other vehicles came from to fill the Ferry or whether it left half empty to Supenaam Stelling.
The anonymous writer’s story seems not to “Add up” since it is logically impossible for a vehicle that is No. 6 in line not being able to travel on the Ferry. A vehicle at No. 30 in the line will be able to travel in normal circumstances along with six (6) trucks. During the Crop Season fifteen (15) vehicles (cars, 4×4, SUV, buses and Pick ups) along with ten (10) to fifteen (15) trucks can travel at the same time.
The anonymous writer needs to stop complaining and come plain so that the Management of the Transport & Harbours Department, Organizations that has a vested interested in the T.H.D, and readers of Kaieteur News can know the whole story, if you have a story to tell.
On the other hand, while the Union would like the workers to follow the instructions of the Transport & Harbours Department, some workers are delinquent.
In situations like this, for the management of Transport & Harbours Department to reassess the workers in the Department the writer cannot be anonymous. The Management must be written to, by the passenger that was disenfranchised and some form of evidence must be available so that action can be taken, or for an inquiry be held into the matter.
