The hunt for a shopkeeper who allegedly murdered a miner nine years ago ended late last week, after police apprehended the suspect at an East Bank Demerara location.
Police said that Alvin Calder, called “Cheebu’ or ‘Compact Disc,’ was arrested after detectives were tipped off about his whereabouts.
Calder, 44, allegedly killed Joseph Willie, a miner, on April 12, 2007, during a dispute at White Water, Mahdia.
While police were initially told that the killing stemmed from a drug dispute, Calder reportedly stated that the miner owed him money and was refusing to honour his debt.
It is alleged that Calder had loaned Willie $160,000, but Willie would repeatedly say that he didn’t have the cash whenever he was asked about the loan.
On April 12, 2007, the shopkeeper reportedly saw Willie’s wife spending money and drinking at a Mahdia location.
He reportedly told the woman: “You drinking and your husband can’t pay me.”
An altercation ensued between the two, and the woman reportedly told her husband, Willie. The suspect alleged that the miner, who was carrying a cutlass, eventually arrived and approached him.
The shopkeeper said that he feared for his safety and discharged two rounds from an unlicensed firearm at the miner.
He then fled from the interior.
While he was in Georgetown, he learnt that Willie had died.
Police are to take the suspect back to the scene of the shooting.
