-Granger tells PNCR General Council meeting
The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) General Council meeting, yesterday, examined the crime situation. The venue for the forum was Congress Place, the party headquarters in Sophia.
President David Granger was the main speaker to address party executives and members who travelled from all over the country.
The PNCR is the major party in A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), itself a part of the coalition government.
The meeting comes at a time when the coalition government is facing mounting pressure from several quarters, over the high crime rate.
On Friday, gunmen stormed the Ramada Princess Hotel Casino, relieving patrons and staff of an undisclosed sum of local and foreign currency. The incident came on the heels of a string of armed robberies and has caused groups such as the Corentyne Chambers of Commerce to rap the government for not doing enough.
Granger, who is the leader of the PNCR, touched on crime during his address. He told the General Council that “my biggest concern is to make Guyana safe for you and for your children.”
Granger also congratulated the newly elected Mayors and Councillors. He stated that the March 18 Local Government Elections (LGE) was a step forward into the future, and he called on members of the party to be leaders in building strong village economies.
Walter Rodney report
Meanwhile, PNCR General Secretary Oscar Clarke presented his report, which is intended to inform the assembly about the party’s status both local and overseas. In his address, Clarke related that the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry (COI) report was received and discussed by the party’s Central Executive Committee.
According to Clarke, an official statement would soon be made on the report. However, he reiterated that in the party’s opinion the “intellectual authors of the COI were never interested in the search for truth.” He stated that the COI was intended to “embarrass the PNCR.”
The COI was completed but never officially released, though sections have been leaked to the media. The Justice for Walter Rodney Committee has been calling on Government to release the report. It is understood that the report has been sent to his family.
The General Secretary also reported to the Council that the Party was strong, poised and preparing for its 19th Biennial Congress scheduled for August 2016. Clarke also congratulated the newly elected Mayors and Councillors. Under the Constitution of the PNCR, the locally elected officials are now members of the General Council of the Party.
Meanwhile, Granger also gave a brief review of the importance of former President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham to the Independence movement. He said that in observance of the Party’s 60th anniversary in 2017, the newly established Forbes Burnham Research and Reference Library would be producing and publishing all the major speeches delivered by the Founder Leader of the PNC.
