Dear Sports Editor,
Reference is hereby made to the above caption as it relates an advertisement appearing in KN 24. 04. 16. Pg 24: sub-headed, “CALL FOR ADVERTISERS-Guyana/Canada INTERNATIONAL Friendly”! Wherein among other disclosures made that have me befuddled are:
i) ”The game will have international coverage streaming live throughout the CONCACAF region and beyond”
ii) ”one-in-a-lifetime-opportunity”
In relation to (i), defending local clubs champions Alpha United, as a participant in the CONCACAF Club Championship, as recent as last year, against Portland Timbers, had live coverage throughout the CONCACAF region and beyond. Local Sports Journalist and TV Commentator, Allan La Rose, as part of the commentary panel.
Editor, in relation to (ii) does it have to do with the visit of an Olympic Qualifying international team? For public dissemination, Central American side Costa Rica, which had more exposure on the international scene than Canada played our local counterparts at Blairmont, 2003, in an under-23 Olympic Qualifier that the visitors won 3-1. Historically, that year Guyana was the only country within CFU to have scored against the Costa Ricans. The locals’ captain Shawn “Bubbly” Beveney was the goal scorer, a Western Tigers Player at the time.
What would be more prudent for Guyana, as a nation would be Canada, being the first North American English speaking country to grace our shores, while not foregoing in 1992 a Mexican under-23 lineup played a local side at GCC, in an International Friendly, that the visitors won 4-0.
The visit by the Canadians being sincerely welcomed, which would assess the “strengths and weaknesses” of the Senior National Team.
Nevertheless, I wish the GFF the best of success in the ensuing endeavor, and would urge all and sundry numbering 15,000 to fill the National Stadium to capacity May, 15th 2016. At the end of 90 minutes, envisage where our football is and how far more we have to go, to match our Regional counterparts in the Caribbean, and further afield.
By the way Editor, when the Mexican under-23 was here, a powerful Mexican figurehead was campaigning for the presidency of CONCACAF. With the presidency of CONCACAF, up for grabs, is the same applicable with the Canadians visit, since a Canadian and a Bermudian are the two Presidential Candidates. By the way is the Canadians visit self-funded, with all expenses paid?
