A Cuban National was fined $30,000 on Friday after she was found guilty of overstaying her time in Guyana.
The charge against Elizabeth Rodriguez, 33, stated that between Saturday April 23, and Wednesday April 27 at Georgetown, she failed to comply with the conditions under which permission was granted for her to stay.
The woman, with the aid of a translator, pleaded guilty when the charge was read to her by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
She had visited Guyana via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport where she was granted permission to stay for one week. Prosecutor Bostwick said police officers who were conducting a road block saw the woman on a motor vehicle and asked her to produce identification of herself.
However she indicated that she had her passport in a hotel where she was currently staying. When police officers escorted her to obtain the travel document, it was discovered that she overstayed her journey based on the date stamped in her passport.
She was then taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters where she was subsequently charged.
According to the defendant who said she came to Guyana as a tourist, she was confused about the date on her passport, she indicated that she was unsure when she was to return.
The Magistrate then ordered her to pay a $30,000 fine or she will serve two weeks in jail and with the commission of either one of the alternatives she will be immediately deported.
