It’s Official! GABF President, Nigel Hinds (third, right) shakes hand with CBC President, Glyne Clarke at Cara Lodge yesterday to officially confirm the hosting of CBC U-16 Championships in Guyana. hosting of the event in July.
GABF President, Nigel Hinds and CBC President, Barbadian, Glyne Clarke attributed signatures to the paperwork and shook hands before stakeholders and the media to signal the coming of the region’s foremost youth basketball Championships to Guyana.
Director of Sport, Christopher Jones said that all facilities “will be on fleek”, using the parlance of youth, ahead of the Championships. Jones said that washroom facilities and other works will ensure Guyana leaves a lasting impression.
He believes that the upgrades to the facilities will not serve for a short term. He restated that the Government is committed to hosting a successful event. Government on Thursday last gave the GABF its commitment to pour in $20 million for the Championships.
Hinds said yesterday that another $20 million will come from the participating countries through the CBC per diem system, while corporate Guyana is expected to come on board to offset a major undertaking that will cost in excess of $70 million overall.
CBC President, Clarke noted that he was happy that the CBC Championships is being held in Guyana stressing that the event will rejuvenate the sport here, which happens to be one of the original pioneers of basketball in the Caribbean.
Meanwhile, Hinds said that the Guyana team to compete at the Championships will be named a month before the event. The National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) Regional Conferences is currently in progress.
Hinds had noted that the organisers of the NSBF, Youth Basketball Guyana through its Director, Chris Bowman will play a major role in organising Guyana’s team.
“We will name the squad three weeks to month before the Championships from the youth tournament that is going on. We don’t want them distracted from what we will be doing during that period they are together,” Hinds stated.
Bowman has been organising schools’ basketball for 11 years. He said that he knows who are the players and is confident that Guyana will put its best team on the court in July when several Caribbean countries descend here.
“We have a nucleolus of players to look at from Linden, Berbice and Georgetown and it is just to bring them out in time so that they can get accustomed to playing with each other, but important to know that our core athletes are constantly playing basketball and that I think will aid in how good both the male and female teams are,” Bowman said.
Hinds pointed out that there is a possibility that overseas-based players can be added to the team based on the need. The male competition of the Caribbean U-16 Championships begins on July 3, while the female contest starts on July 12 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
