Linden teams will make the journey to the East Coast of Demerara tomorrow for the start of the Mayor’s Cup Football tournament at the Victoria Ground. The action kicks off with a doubleheader which will see the Lindeners invading the East Coast in the hope of capturing early honours as they hunt championship glory in this the 22nd edition of the tournament that is coordinated by former national player and coach Lennox Arthur.
Tomorrow’s action commences from 6:00pm with Mahaica of the Upper East Coast area clashing with Eagles United of Linden in the curtain raiser. That contest will be followed by the nightcap in which home side Victoria Kings collide with another Linden outfit in Milerock from 8:00pm.
The tournament continues Monday May 2 at the same venue with Golden Grove battling Grove Hi Tech of the East Bank Demerara, while in the nightcap Ann’s Grove go against fellow East Coast team Buxton Bakewell.
This year the tournament is being coincided with the country’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee celebrations.
The teams are battling for the Mayor’s Cup and cash prizes, with the top four set to claim respective $700,000, $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000.
Arthur has expressed gratitude to the sponsors on board so far. Among them are Banks DIH, Cummings Electrical, TCL (Mark Bender), Clinton Urling and German’s Restaurant and Muneshwar’s. The Government of Guyana is also on board.
