A South Ruimveldt resident was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the murder of Sophia
businessman Shawn Anys, which occurred on May 1, last year, when he appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Jamal Forde of Plum Park, South Ruimveldt was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleged that he killed the businessman during the course of a robbery.
Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal David Goodridge told the court that the accused was pointed out during an identification (ID) parade. The prosecutor revealed that he is still seeking further advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the way forward.
Another man, Odel Roberts, 24, of ‘C’ Field Sophia was committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of Anys last week at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry in the aforementioned court.
According to reports, Anys, who owned a small grocery shop, was confronted by armed bandits at his home.
It was reported that the gunmen shot Anys while demanding cash and valuables from him. They reportedly made off with $40,000 cash along with jewellery.
The 37-year-old businessman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul instructed Forde to return to court on May 31.
