An air of pride was abundant yesterday at the D’Urban Park tarmac as hundreds of men and women of the joint services braved the rains to witness their comrades in arms being honoured with prestigious awards by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Brigadier (R’td) David Granger.
One hundred and twenty men and women from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) received their accolades from the Head of State.
The afternoon’s proceedings began with a Parade March and concluded with a Flag- Lowering.
Present at the ceremony were Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan; Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo; Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, among others.
Nearby residents were joined by other curious individuals to witness the event. Like the members of the joint services, they too exhibited an unwavering spirit as the rain drenched the surrounding structures while some shook to the beat emanating from the drums of the military band.
Sixty members of the Guyana Police Force received the Border Defence Medal and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, while ranks from the Guyana Defence Force were honoured with the Military Efficiency Medal and the Border Defence Medal.
The Military Efficiency Medal is awarded to serving members of the GDF who would have completed ten years of continuous service with good conduct and approved by the Chief of Staff following recommendations by the Medal Awards Committee.
The medal is made of nickel, circular in shape and measures 33mm in diameter. On the obverse of the medal is the Cacique Crown in the centre which is encircled by the inscription, ‘One people, One nation, One Destiny Guyana’. On the reverse, there are two crossed swords and the words Military Efficiency Medal inscribed.
The Border Defence Medal is awarded to serving members of the Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force who would have had cumulative service on a Border location in excess of one year and approved by the Chief of Staff or the Commissioner of Police, also following recommendations by the Medal Awards Committee.
That medal is made of nickel, circular in shape and measures 35mm in diameter. On the obverse of the medal is the Cacique Crown in the centre which is also encircled by the inscription, One people, One nation, One Destiny Guyana.
On the reverse of the medal is a circular image of Mount Ayanganna on which is planted the Golden Arrowhead, at the base of Mount Ayanganna are bushes and water.
Meanwhile, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is awarded to serving members of the Disciplined Services for 15 years of continuous service with good conduct and approved by the Commissioner of Police following recommendations by the Medal Awards Committee.
The medal is made of nickel, circular in shape and measures 35mm in diameter. On the obverse of the medal is the Cacique Crown in the centre which is encircled by the inscription, One people, One nation, One Destiny Guyana.
On the reverse of the medal there is a key, a baton and an axe and the words ‘For Long Service and Good Conduct’ inscribed.
