The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department is being accused of seeking to disrupt trade between Guyana and France. The accusation followed the release of a press statement and subsequent publication in one of the nation’s daily newspapers.
The analyst is challenging the milk imported by the International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA) under the trade name, LAILAC. He is contending that the milk produced by the French company which is being credited with producing LAILAC milk does not actually produce a milk that could be considered infant milk. The presence of vegetable oils that is used to replace milk fat is one issue.
Further, the analyst said that it has no information on the vegetable oil used in the imported milk. In a further report, the analyst stated that the Materials Management Unit of the Public Health Ministry had complained about defective batches of the LAILAC milk.
However, IPA is refuting the label that it is importing substandard milk. “LAILAC Infant milk is manufactured by NUTRIBIO, located in France. The company produces several brands of milk including Nactalia and Lailac.
The company is a merger between Cofranlait and SodiaalIndustrie, which are subsidiaries of the Entremont Alliance Group and the Sodiaal Group.
“It produces several brands of products of which LAILAC is the brand marketed in the Middle East, Caribbean and Africa. In this region, Guatemala also imports this brand. All its products are manufactured in France.”
IPA said that NUTRIBIO also has state-of-the-art laboratories responsible for the analyses of the products and formulas and the assessment of the quality and safety of the products. The laboratories work in compliance with ISO 17025 and are equipped with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) allowing a computerized traceability of all results.
Responding to the charge that the presence of vegetable oil negates the product as baby milk, IPA stated, “All milk based baby formulas are made with cow’s milk, vegetable oils, vitamins, minerals and usually fortified with iron (as recommended by the American Academy of Paediatrics).”
“The natural content of milk fat is poor in these fatty acids and does not allow the formulae to reach the minimum requirements. For this reason, it is necessary to use vegetable oils.”
Each type of oil has its own fatty acid profile and thus, it is not possible to reach the desired fatty acids profile for an infant formula by using only one type of vegetable oil, hence most formulae have a blend of two or more vegetable oils. This is evident in Lailac, Enfamil, SMA, Lactogen and Similac, all of which are sold on the local market.
“Based on these facts, it seems that the GA-FDD seems to be deliberately targeting International Pharmaceutical Agency and we consider this action discriminatory.
“Nutribio is very concerned that one of its brands ‘Lailac’ is being labelled as a fake product in an article published by one of our local newspapers and will consider a further response.”
