The St Lucian boxing team that will arrive this evening for their challenge at the Schoolboys and Junior tournament at the Sports Hall Friday and Saturday. Coach Conrad Hunte is second right.
Caribbean Airlines flight. This was disclosed by President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle.
The team will comprise of Light welterweight Nathan Ferrari, lightweight Kareem Boyce and welterweight Taj Brown and will be coached by Conrad Hunte a former Guyanese boxer.
Ferrari was named St Lucia’s Best Junior Boxer of 2015, and Brown recently competed at an international tournament in Guadeloupe.
Jamaica’s team will arrive on Friday. That team will have Joshua Forrest Davidson (69 kg), Daniel Hylton (60 kg) and Jerone Enniss (69kg) a light welterweight along with Robert Napier who is the coach.
This tournament is aimed at improving the caliber of fighters in the Caribbean Region after this was agreed on by the heads of the various associations at recent meetings. The Caribbean aims to produce a better quality fighter that will make their mark on the world stage and break the Olympic jinx. Guyana’s lone Olympic medal is a Bronze won by boxer Michael Parris at the Moscow Games in 1980.
The GBA is encouraging boxing fans to come out in their numbers to the Sports Hall Friday and Saturday from 6:00pm and support the boxers. The action promises to be hectic and exciting as is customary among the young fighters. Admission to the venue is just $500 for anyone over 12 years, while any child under 12 will gain free entry.
