Long serving Secretary/CEO of Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation the Rose Hall Town
Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster could soon become a Sports Ambassador if the Constitution of Guyana allows it. President David Granger during the feature address at the RHTYCS, M.S 26th annual award ceremony stated that he was very impressed with the outstanding work of the Club and would like to have it replicated in all of the regions of Guyana.
The RHTYSC, MS, the President stated was breaking down walls of division which prevented people because of their origin from participating in some works. Vision and hard work, the Head of State stated, epitomize work of Foster over the last 25 years. “What we have seen here in Guyana over the last quarter of a century is the result of hard work and vision by MR. Foster to make this a reality. It could not have been easy, in fact if 25 years ago, you tried to draw a chart of the number of sports organisation in Guyana and see where they are today, we will see what an achievement, the RHTYSC, MS has brought about in the country,” the President noted as he expressed the wish for the Club to take its success story to areas like Bartica and Mabaruma.
The President stated Guyana needs more visionary and dynamic Clubs like the RHTYSC, MS but noted that, “We only have one Hilbert Foster and that’s the problem,” to loud applause from the capacity gathering of Club members, special invitees, donors and government officials. The Club Patron then continued to another round of applause, “And I hope that following the example of the 18th of March (Local Government Election) we will be able to replicate this model in all of the regions. So perhaps I must search the Guyana Constitution to see if I have the power to make this young man (Foster) a sports ambassador to all of the other regions.”
The forty six years old Foster, founded the RHTYSC, MS at the tender age of 20 years and has served as its Secretary/CEO since 2000 after serving as its Public Relations Officer from 1990 to 1999. Under his leadership, the Cricket section of the Club has developed into one of the best in Guyana, winning three national Championships and winning the Club of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010. The Club also boasts of Guyana’s only female cricket team and every year undertakes an unmatchable total of 300 activities under the sub- headings of sports, charity, culture, education, awards, anti-crime, anti-suicide, anti-drugs, honour, youth development and community development among others. The RHTYSC, MS also created history when it received a National Award – The Medal of Service and has also received awards from Rotary International and the International Olympic Committee.
Foster, in 2010 became the first Club official in Guyana to ever receive a National Sports Personality from the National Sports Commission, served the Berbice Cricket Board from 2008 to 2014 as Chairman of its Special Events Committee and successfully supervised the completion of just over 1500 programmes/activities. He is primarily viewed as responsible for the BCB’s transformation from a mere cricketed entity into a successful NGO. The administrator is also credited for raising over $20M to transform a swampland into a modern sport facility that now boasts the three pavilions, an all-weather Court, sanitary facilities, scoreboard, sight-screens, internal fence and is completely fenced with zinc.
Among Foster’s major achievements at the Berbice Cricket Board are cricket at all levels including Inter Zone, Annual Review Magazine, Annual Cricket Academy, Countrywide Coaching Clinics, Hall of Fame for Players and Administrators, Tribute to Heroes, Tribute to Retired Cricketers, Tribute to Coaches, Assistance to Clubs, Test Cricketers billboards, Role Model/Mentors Programme, Independence 20/20 Cup among others.
Foster in an invited comment after President Granger’s remarks stated that he would assist more youths to fulfill their sporting potentials while assisting them to stay away from a life of drugs and suicide. Despite his hectic schedule at the RHTYSC, MS which sees him working from 9AM to 7PM every day of the week, Foster stated that whenever a nation’s President calls, any “patriotic” Guyanese must be willing to serve in the national interest. If appointed as Sports Ambassador, Foster stated he would work tirelessly with other Club Officials to make sure that every Region in Guyana has a sporting organisation that would assist youths to fulfill their potentials in sports, culture and education.
