Police in Guyana’s interior have come in for high praise following the capture of two bandits, less than a day after they battered and robbed a 42-year-old dredge owner in the Mazaruni area.
The two men, a Guyanese and a Brazillian, had invaded the camp of Neil Jordan and relieved him of a quantity of raw gold after chopping him several times about his body on Sunday.
Police in a statement said that on that day, Jordan who hails from Bartica, was at a mining camp at Farback Backdam, Mazaruni, when he was held up by two men armed with a firearm and a cutlass.
“During the incident Neil Jordan was chopped to his body by the men who took away a quantity of raw gold and escaped.”
The police said that ranks responded to the report and managed to intercept the two perpetrators on Monday night in Mazaruni.
An unlicensed 9mm pistol with seven rounds and a cutlass were recovered by the police.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday, a relative of the wounded miner was loud in his praise for the police after learning that they had apprehended Jordan’s attackers.
The relative related that although Jordan received chop wounds to his head and other parts of his body, for which he had to receive treatment in Bartica, he returned to the backdam on Monday to assist the police in apprehending the two men.
Kaieteur News was told that on Sunday, Jordan and some of his workers were in the process of ‘washing down’ when the two men barged into their camp, firing shots into the air.
Jordan’s workers became terrified and ran away to safety leaving the dredge owner behind to “face the music”.
“They beat he and chop he in he head and on he hand,” Jordan’s relative said, adding that he was so badly wounded that he could not even ride his ATV to get to medical attention.
“They had to hire a bike to bring him out,” the relative added.
Upon arrival at Bartica, the wounded dredge owner reported the matter to the police before going to seek medical attention.
