The Cleanup Project which is slated to be on April 29 and April 30, will be done in all communities of the Region. Chairman of the Environmental Committee Wainwright Bethune urged all citizens to come out and clean their surroundings.
“This is a collaborative effort between the entire Linden and the stakeholders because if you look at the town, from Bamia to Third Phase Wisroc, much is desired.”
Bethune is urging everyone to come out and clean their yards, drains and also urged the CDC’s to take responsibility and pilot the cleanup project and beautify the town.
According to Bethune, May is a very significant month not only for Linden but for Guyana as a whole. “You know we are celebrating our 50th anniversary as a nation, 46 years as a town and 100 years of bauxite mining in the community.”
Deputy Mayor, Wanita Arrindell, told media operatives that the Clean up project is geared to enhance the town for the 50th anniversary.
“The Town Council is asking all to come out and clean up. We pledge for those with the overburden, the stuff you cannot bury or burn, we are pledging our sanitary workers to assist.”
According to the Deputy Mayor, flowers could also be planted to make Linden look good for the 50th.
Regional Chairman Renis Morian said he is happy that the initiative began with the M&TC and the RDC could be a part. He said that the RDC councilors will have to be a part and clean up not just Linden but Region Ten. “This is our time, so it is very important for us to come out and cleanup.”
Morian also urged the media to come out not only with their cameras but with their spades and other tools to assist.
“This is a Linden thing, a people thing; a collective effort.” He claimed that the focus is to clean up “some people interpret clean up as just weeding and carting away debris and stuff but in a general sense it is to clean your space.”
The Regional Chairman added that soon the Regional Tree Planting Programme will begin; while he is not pushing for flowers the Regional Councilors are working to determine what kind of trees will be planted across the Region. Morian noted that the programme is not just the RDC but also the CDC’s.
He said it is in keeping with the president’s green programme and it is not flowers he is talking about.
According to Morian it is hoped that the Regional tree planting programme will be launched by the second week in May.
