Dear Editor,
I write in response to article published on page 19 of the Kaieture News, dated March 25 2016 captioned ‘Ranks saying Neighborhood Police have out lived their usefulness’.
Being an active member of the Neighborhood Police for over nine years I am very perturbed at the blatant misconception of the use of N.H.P specifically targeted in ‘B’ Division. It is obvious that the writer of the article has serious grudges over this particular group of helpers which are meant to be the eyes and ears of the Guyana Police Force.
It is sad to note that the misdemeanor of a few Police ranks attracts widespread condemnation of the Police Force, similarly a few negligent members of the N.H.P has caused some selfish Police Officer/s of the Regular Police Department to lash out in hate and fury labeling this vital group of police assistants as ‘barefaced’. Some members of the Police Force are very uncomfortable having the N.H.P working in the communities because the injustices meted out to civilians whenever they visit the stations are being relayed to these N.H.P’s simply because they belong to these communities, are less corrupted and share a better interpersonal relationship.
I do agree that there are N.H.P members who deserve to be at home seeking employment elsewhere but at the same time there are some of us who serve as refreshers to regular ranks who have graduated from the Police Training College and have just ventured out into the world of practical policing .Some of us work acidulously in our communities with youth and even lend helping hands at stations when the need arises. Subordinate Officers who are honest can attest to the fact that at some stations in the ‘B’ Division, the N.H.P plays pivotal roles in service and protection while the Regular Ranks play a secret role in lawlessness and corruption.
I wish to bring to the attention of some S/O’s in charge of stations, the risks of N.H.P’s becoming enemies to the persons in their Neighborhood whom they might have arrested, corrected of even shared information to the police leading up to jail terms and courts intervention.
This generalization is very dangerous and should be brought to a halt since good results are gained through good relationships and respect for all humans regardless of designation. One famous song artist sang “A man is still a man whether him wear jacket and tie or him walk barefoot, the only difference is whether him good or evil. I think that instead of trying to take bread out of the mouth of a group of primarily women who are mostly single parents, the writer of the article should try to seek ways and means of fostering a strong working relationship with members of the Neighborhood Police who might at this time feel very unfortunate having being placed under the supervision of a subordinate who wants to declare war on a bunch of people who seem to be suffering from inferiority complex.
