…lawyer claims client “technologically challenged”
The police are ready to proceed with the trial of a 52-year-old Vergenogen, East Bank Essequibo woman
who allegedly posted threats to President David Granger and made racially-inciting comments about African Guyanese via her Facebook and WhatsApp accounts.
This information was revealed yesterday by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, when Bibi Salim appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Salim, a mother of three, was slapped with two charges that were filed under the Racial Hostility Act – for attempting to incite excitement, hostility or ill-will on the grounds of race.
One of the charges alleged that during the period of March 1 and 31, the woman attempted to incite hostility or ill-will against the President by posting on Facebook “Granger want a bullet in he head” among others.
She was also accused of sending derogatory remarks about the President from her cell phone to her son’s cell phone via WhatsApp.
Salim who was represented by Attorney Euclin Gomes pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted $200,000 bail.
During his bail application, the woman’s lawyer told the court that his client is “technologically challenged”. He said that it is highly unlikely that Salim was the one who made the posts. Gomes asked that she be released on bail because she is not a flight risk.
However, his bail application was met with objections from Prosecutor Jeffers. Jeffers strongly opposed to pre-trial liberty for the defendant citing the serious nature of the charges. The prosecutor pointed out that the threat to the President and racial remarks attracted comments from others.
According to Jeffers, the defendant admitted to police that she posted the comments and remarks. He informed the court that police are in possession of the defendant’s laptop computer which she used to access her social media accounts to make the posts.
Jeffers indicated that the police file is complete and he is ready to proceed with trial which will see fourteen witnesses testifying.
The matter had been adjourned until May 11, for trial.
Salim had been released on $500,000 station bail pending investigations into the matter.
