The taxi driver who transported Simone Hackett’s alleged killer to Mahdia was yesterday remanded to
prison, after he was charged with the woman’s murder when he appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Ranachal Singh, 31, of Lot 7 Good Hope, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara is alleged to have killed Hackett between April 16 and April 19 at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
Last Friday, Hackett’s ‘child father’ Cleavaughn Hamilton also known as ‘Quarters’ was charged and remanded to prison for her murder. The 30-year-old father of two reportedly confessed to the crime.
According to reports, the partially decomposed body of the 25-year-old mother of one of “C” Field, Sophia was discovered in a trench parallel to the University of Guyana (UG) road, at Fourth Field, Cummings Lodge on April 19. It was reported that her throat was slit and there was what appeared to be two stab wounds to the back of her neck.
On April 16, Hackett left to retrieve a package that was sent by Hamilton for their son from a person named “Dexter”. It was reported that the woman went missing one day before she was supposed to play the role of maid of honour at her sister’s wedding.
At yesterday’s court hearing, Police Prosecutor, Inspector Hattie Anthony, told the court that Singh and the other accused allegedly picked up Hackett at UG Access Road on the evening of April 16. She added that the woman was taken further down the said road where she was killed.
The prosecutor stated that after the killing, Singh transported the other accused to Mahdia although he knew that the man had killed Hackett.
According to Anthony, the police file is still incomplete.
Attorney Jerome Khan, who represented Singh, told the court that his client is innocent of the charge. The lawyer added that he is confident that the charge will be “worn out” at the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry.
Khan said that his client is a father of two and a taxi driver by profession.
Both Singh and Hamilton will make their next court appearance on May 18 before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.
