-SUR, MFL turn in creditable performances
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ran away with the lion’s share of the spoils from the Boyce & Jefford Relay Festival and Family Fun Day on Sunday, while the other clubs evenly shared what was left from the remaining
events.
The Defence Force won the marquee Men’s 4x100m, 4x200m and distance medley races, while their disqualification and that of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) handed the Men’s sprint medley win to the Super Upcoming Runners (SUR). Police won the Men’s 4x400m.
The SUR girls won the sprint medley and surprisingly the 4x100m relay, upsetting the favourites in the process. Mercury Fast Laners (MFL) strode to the Girls distance medley and 4x400m, and the Police women arrested the 4x200m.
What promised to be a day of excitement, intense rivalry and fun lived up to all expectations, as battles raged, both on and off the track, particularly among the armed forces. The situation came to a climax in the Men’s sprint medley (100x200x400x800m).
Police’s, Kevin Abbensettes threw down the gauntlet against GDF’s Rupert Perry for the 100m, before Elton Bollers extended the lead for Police on the 200m leg.
A tangle between Kareem Purch and GDF’s, Davin Fraser in the 400m leg cemented the rivalry among the two teams when Fraser tried to overtake Purch on the turn. Though
both managed to finish their legs, with Police eventually winning the race and GDF in second, uproar followed on the field, with officials having to restrain the fuming athletes.
Both teams were subsequently disqualified, with SUR named winners, MFL second place, and the University of Guyana (UG) team third.
However, GDF was the most accomplished Men’s team of the day, beating the Police into second place in the 4x100m, 4x200m, and distance medley races. Newcomer SUR was third in all three of those relays.
SUR was second in the Men’s 4x400m, while MFL was third. Police picked up second place in the women’s sprint medley, and 4x100m, where MFL also finished third both times, as well as second in the 4x400m.
The GDF women finished second in the distance medley and 4x200m, and third in the 4x400m. Disaster struck for the team in the sprint medley after a bad hand over with a dropped baton saw the team finishing fourth in that event.
Clubs from Linden also participated in the event. Each race carried a total purse of $40,000 with $20,000 for first place; $12,000 for second place and $8,000 for third.
Meanwhile, in the female softball cricket showdown, Trophy Stall Angels defeated Mike’s Well Woman for the $50,000 prize, while the opposition received $25,000. In the male game, Trophy Stall XI defeated Boyce/Jefford Select XI.
In the 5-a-side football competition, Presidential Guard defeated Young Warriors 2-1 to cart off the $50,000 first prize, while the opposition received $25,000. The Boyce/Jefford group has vowed to make the event an annual feature.
