A fine all-round performance by Ronaldo Mohamed handed Demerara a comfortable 124-run victory (D/L Method) over Essequibo when the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand inter county 50-over U19 tournament
commenced yesterday.
Mohamed struck two fours and a similar number of sixes in an unbeaten 53 as Demerara managed 147-7 off their reduced 38 overs due to rain, taking first strike at Wales.
Ronaldo Renee and Raymond Perez added 19 for the opening stand before Perez was caught off Looknauth Chinkoo for six.
Left arm spinner Miguel Jones then trapped Travis Persaud lbw for 14 and sent back Renee for 28 (4×4) leaving Demerara at 50-3. Mohamed and Sherfene Rutherford then featured in a fourth-wicket stand of 67 to stabilise their innings fairly. Rutherford survived a stumping off Looknauth Chinkoo-wicket keeper Nathan Persaud failed to gather the ball after the left-hander advanced down the track.
Rutherford then smashed Chinkoo for two maximums and a four in the said over as he raced to 38, but skipper Keemo Paul brought himself on and immediately separated the pair who were beginning to look dangerous- Rutherford skied the first ball of his second spell to mid-on. A lengthy rain delay then caused the overs to be reduced, but Mohamed who timed the ball well, guided his team to a decent total on a pitch which batting became a difficult task as the game proceed.
Jones claimed 3-21 while Paul, Akenie Adams and Chinkoo had one each.
Mohamed sent back Mark Williams and Satesh Latchana cheaply to leave Essequibo at 11-2 in reply. Paul punched Richie Looknauth (1-7) to the cover boundary to get off the mark, but the off-spinner bowled him for eight moments later to put Essequibo in further trouble. Sachin Persaud laboured for 50 balls in scoring 11, while Siddique Mohamed faced 41 balls for his 12- the pair added 22 for the fifth-wicket which proved to be the best partnership of the innings in a dismal batting display. Following their separation, Essequibo lost their last five wickets for 14 runs to be all out for 56 in 28.4 overs. Keshram Seyhodan was the pick of the bowlers with 4-9, while Mohamed had 3-7 and Travis Persaud 2-20.
The competition continues tomorrow.
