Dear Editor,
If loyal and patriotic Guyanese think that the appointment of Brian Tiwari stinks to high heavens, then how will they rate the following:
1. The appointment of the Regional Executive Officer of Region 6. Is this sharing the political pie with someone who has a divine right for the position because he has worked hard for the Coalition?
2. The appointments of Personal Assistants of the Prime Minister in the various Regions. Is this a breach of managerial principles and ethics? Are these persons abrogating the functions of local democratic organs and usurping their powers? Are they not integral parts of the political exercise of the Prime Minister?
3. The appointment of an Administrative Manager of Hope Estate by Minister Holder at the request of the Government without the knowledge and approval of the Board of Directors. Is this not another case of the Coalition rewarding one of their cronies? What does this reveal about Minister Holder’s competence, integrity and capacity for critical, creative and innovative thinking?
4. The eviction of the Chairman of Hope Coconut Industries Limited, Dr Iamei Aowmathi, by the Administrative Manager. A group of rich farmers who have breached their tenancy agreements with the estate by planting permanent crops instead of cash crops. These farmers were given large acreages under the past government and have no connection whatsoever with Hope Estate. Some of these farmers live abroad and are subletting the lands for higher rents to poor farmers, thereby making huge profits. Is this an integral part of giving poor Guyanese the good life by giving preferential treatment to political and rich cronies? Is the present government obligated to continue the nefarious practices of the past administration?
5. Minister Holder putting the Hope Estate Board of Directors in abeyance at the request of the Minister of State and allowing the Administrative Manager to still function in order to continue what was that was practiced under the last government. Are we witnessing a new form of good governance as practiced by the Minister Noel Holder? When will he put the management in abeyance as well as having a forensic audit as requested by the Minister of State? Or is the Coalition in a grand conspiracy against the Minister of State?
6. The closing down of Wales and LBI estate and putting hard-working poor Guyanese on the bread line. Is this a new and innovative way to give poor people the good life? Or is another great way to reduce the population via suicide so that there will be less people to share the crumbs falling from the plates of political and rich cronies? Or is this yet another scheme to create business entrepreneurs?
7. The appointments of retired and old cronies as consultants, honorific advisers, etc in substantive positions. Is the government bent on rewarding old cronies, family, friends and relatives who already have enough and are enjoying old age and NIS pensions, gratuities, etc? Who is going to give youths the opportunities to gain experience? When are we going to see the resumes of these persons who were so gifted with key positions? Is this the new form of good governance or are our leaders vying for places at Canje?
These are just a few of the things that need answers. We have voted for a change and had hoped that we would see the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ as stated by the Minister of Social Cohesion. Is this the light of a super fast train coming to crush us? If this government is not an exchange of the last one, then what is it? As a people, we demand that vacant positions be publicly advertised so that eligible Guyanese can apply and demand that all secret deals end. Enough is enough!!!
