The Jamaican boxing team competing in the International Schoolboys and Juniors boxing
tournament starting Friday, are due to arrive in Guyana on Thursday. President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, made the disclosure and indicated that Jamaica is seeking to add another boxer to its team.
The tournament commences on Friday and concludes Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The tourney is the first of its kind in the Caribbean and comes on the heels of the 13-nation Caribbean Development Tournament held here last year.
Joshua Forrest Davidson (69 kg) and Daniel Hylton (60 kg) are the pair identified to battle for Jamaica in the two-day event and they will be overlooked by Coach Robert Napier.
Ninvalle informed, “We have been notified by the Jamaican association that they are now looking to send another boxer. This is good news for us as we have asked specifically for fighters in the lighter weight divisions.”
Hylton, no stranger to Guyana, was here last November to compete in the Caribbean Development Tournament. He defeated local boy Christopher Moore in his first fight, but was later stopped by Trinidadian Justin Parris.
St Lucia will also be here for the event with a four member team. The St Lucians would be led by light
welterweight Nathan Ferrari, with lightweight Kareem Boyce and welterweight Taj Brown. Ferrari, who was named St Lucia’s Best Junior Boxer of 2015, would be making his second trip to Guyana. The trio will be accompanied by a coach.
Meanwhile, local coach Sebert Blake will wrap up the final two-day training camp for local boxers this afternoon at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis gym. Blake and a team comprising GABA Technical Director Terrence Poole and Clifton Moore have been fine tuning the young pugilist via weekly camps.
