Guyana’s national rugby team will open its quest to regain the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Championship when they face Barbados today, at the National Park Playfield, starting from 16:00 hrs.
The national ruggers commonly referred to as the ‘Green Machine’ will be aiming to regain the title they lost to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) last year, while the tournament is also being used as a qualifier for the 2019 World Cup so a lot is at stake for the Guyanese who has been the most dominant unit in regional rugby for a number of years.
Captain Richard Staglon, one of the most experienced players in the squad speaking with the media on Wednesday said the team which has a mixture of experience and youth is extremely confident of beating the visiting Barbadians and was rearing to get into action in front of what is anticipated to be a partisan home crowd.
Staglon, who plays in T&T is the inspiration of the team and uses his vast experience gained from playing at the international level to motivate the younger players.
The Guyanese defeated the Bajans 48-22 in a dominating performance last year right here in Guyana and while the Captain has expressed confidence of repeating that performance he also recognized that every tournament these days are becoming harder to win with teams possessing players who’re playing their trade in countries that play at a higher level.
Guyana will be without the services of two very key players in Claudius Butts and Theodore Henry with the former nursing an injury, while Henry is overseas on a Sports Course.
However, apart from Staglon, players such as Avery Corbin, who produced an inspiring performance last year along with Peabo Hamilton, Ronald Mayers, former Captain Ryan Gonsalves, Dwayne Schroeder and the speedy Patrick King are in the line-up and they have the ability to pose a serious threat to any team in the Americas.
Staglon when questioned about the opposition said that not much is known about them, but cautioned that the visitors usually gets players who’re playing overseas to return to increase their strength.
With the ability of the Bajans unknown, Staglon and President of the Union Peter Green have urged all Guyana to come out and rally around the ‘Green Machine’ as it attempts to recapture the glory that it enjoyed not so long ago.
Meanwhile, the Bajans arrived in the country yesterday and was scheduled to hold a practice session, at the National Park.
