A fine half century by Looknauth Chinkoo and a four-wicket haul by Sherfene
Rutherford highlighted the second day’s play when action in the third and final round of the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand Inter County U19 three-day tournament continued yesterday at Bourda.
Chinkoo half-century knock lifted Essequibo, following the lost of three early wickets, after most of the morning session was lost due to a section of the square being in a soggy state.
Essequibo decided to bat and pacer Sherfene Rutherford had Nathan Persaud caught for four before Siddique Mohamed was lbw to Keshram Seyhodan for 11 leaving the score at 35-2. Skipper Keemo Paul lofted Darshan Persaud for a straight six to get off the mark, but the off-spinner disturbed his stumps in the said over for seven as Essequibo slipped to 48-3.
Opener Mark Williams and Akenie Adams added 53 for the fourth wicket before Adams played across to Persaud and was bowled for 13. The left-handed Williams cut Ronaldo Mohamed to the point boundary before hitting Persaud through long-on and mid-wicket, but after looking set for a half century he was trapped lbw to Seyhodan for 46 (7×4).
Chinkoo and Jonathan Fernandes then boost their team further with aggressive batting in hazy conditions. Chinkoo took boundaries off Malcolm Hubbard and Travis Persaud, while Fernandes punched Darshan Persaud to the point boundary as Essequibo went to tea at 155-5. The duo continued to bat aggressively after the interval – Fernandes struck Hubbard for two sixes and a four in one over before smashing Darshan Peraud for a towering six over mid-wicket. Chinkoo inched closer to his half century with boundaries off Darshan Persaud and Travis Persaud, but after reaching the milestone he was bowled by the lively Rutherford for 52. Seyhodan then sent back Fernandes for 37, but Travay Wolfe hit two fours in scoring 19 not out as Essequibo were bowled out for 197 in 61.1 overs. Rutherford had 4-27 and Seyhodan 3-37.
Ronaldo Renee (07*) and Raymond Perez (07*) saw Demerara to the close at 16 without loss. Play continues at 09:30 hrs today.
