A goldminer has been charged with the murder of Simone Hackett whose body was found in a canal
with her throat slit, last Tuesday.
The last person to speak with her was her reputed husband, and father of her son, Cleavaughn Hamilton, according to reports. He is now in custody.
Hamilton also known as ‘Quarters’ appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon where he was charged with the murder of 25-year-old Simone Hackett of ‘C’ Field Sophia. He allegedly killed the woman at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara between April 16 and April 19, 2016.
The 30-year-old father of two of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the capital offence when it was read to him by Magistrate Zamina Ally.
According to police reports, Hamilton confessed to the crime on Thursday.
But Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry, who represented Hamilton, told the court that his client’s confession was an allegation, since the police had prohibited his client’s right to seek legal counsel.
The lawyer who claimed that his client was beaten by inmates while in the holding cell at the Sparendaam Police Station asked that investigations be taken into how the caution statement was given to the police and the method they used to obtain his client’s alleged confession.
However, Lance Corporal David Goodridge contended it was through interrogation that the accused confessed to the police. Hamilton was remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned until May 18.
According to reports the mother of one, who was supposed to play the role of maid of honour for her sister’s wedding went missing one day before the ceremony.
Hackett, on April 16, last, left to retrieve a package from a person named “Dexter”. The package was being sent by Hamilton, for his son’s birthday from Mahdia. She was never heard of again.
Her body was later discovered on Tuesday by schoolboys on their way to school.
