Jubilee Shoot set for Sunday
As the Guyana National Rifle Association (GuyanaNRA) continues to piece together finances to ensure it is present in Antigua and Barbuda next month to defend its Caribbean Short Range and Individual titles at the West Indies Full Bore Shooting Championships, three more corporate entities have presented cheques.
Association Secretary Ryan Sampson has disclosed that Mohamed’s Enterprise, Sterling Products Limited and Starr Computer have all contributed towards the Caribbean champions being present.
“We are very grateful to the management of Mohamed’s Enterprise, Sterling Products and Starr Computers for their support. We wish to also thank Minister Nicolette Henry for assisting the Rifle Team to acquire the requisite tax waivers from the Guyana Revenue Authority,” Sampson stated.
Gratitude was also extended to Caribbean Airlines and LIAT for assisting with procuring flights for the team.
Meanwhile, the GuyanaNRA as part of Guyana’s 50th Jubilee Anniversary celebrations will be hosting a Jubilee Pairs Match which will be the first of its kind in Guyana and possibly the Caribbean.
This format of shooting which is used at the Commonwealth Games will see competitors also coaching whilst competing in turn.
The pairs are: Lennox Braithwaite/Ryan Sampson; Mahendra Persaud/Dane Blair; Ransford Goodluck/Sherwin Felicien; Dylan Fields/Peter Persaud, Leo Romalho/Terrence Stuart.
According to National Captain, Mahendra Persaud, the names of the five X-Class shooters were put into a bag with each of the five junior shooters pulling one of the X-Class names to be their partner on Sunday.
This format Persaud said would enhance the abilities of the junior marksmen as wind coaches since the senior shooters would not be shooting with scopes.
“They {seniors} would be depending on their counterparts to read the wind efficiently which should be an interesting scenario as the pairs seems evenly matched on paper,” Persaud noted.
Persaud also noted that with the winds switching left to right rapidly over the past few weeks of practice, Sunday’s match would test the skills of the best wind coaches.
The first sighting shot will be fired at 10:30hrs from the 300 yards range; the 500 and 600 yards ranges are also of the competition. The Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brig. Gen. Mark Phillips is expected to be on hand for the presentation ceremony as well as Mr. Trevor Williams of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports who will represent the Minister.
