The Guyana Police Force says that at no time was Attorney-at-Law Patrice Henry ordered out of the Sparendaam Police Station and denied his client the right to his attorney.
The police were responding to an article published in yesterday’s edition of this newspaper under the caption “Missing Bridesmaid: ‘Child father’ apprehended in Mahdia,” in which it was stated, that the lawyer was denied the right to speak to his client who was in police custody at Sparendaam Police Station by Deputy Superintendent Ludovick Scotland.
In clarifying what took place, the Force said that during Wednesday night, Deputy Superintendent Scotland went to the Sparendaam Police Station to conduct an interview of murder suspect Clevon Hamilton. The man was held earlier that day in connection with the murder of Simone Hackett, whose body was discovered on Tuesday in a trench parallel to the University of Guyana Access Road in Cummingslodge.
According to the police, on arrival in the Enquiries Office of the station, on his way to the CID Office, Scotland saw both Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry and Clevon Hamilton.
The police said that at no stage did Scotland engage in any conversation with Patrice Henry, nor did Henry make any attempt to speak to him. At the CID Office, Deputy Superintendent Scotland sent a rank to escort Hamilton to the office where he proceeded to conduct the interview.
While doing so, Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry and Constable Robin, who was on duty in the Enquiries Office, entered the CID Office.
The police said that at this stage, Deputy Superintendent Scotland enquired of Constable Robin as to why he had allowed the lawyer to come into the CID Office during the interview, whereupon Constable Robin informed Patrice Henry that he should leave the CID Office, to which he complied.
The police said that at no time did Deputy Superintendent Scotland order Attorney-at-Law Patrice Henry out of the Sparendaam Police Station, as alleged.
