of Marcy Dam, Rosignol West Bank Berbice, who is accused of having sex with a girl under 16, was on Tuesday committed to stand trial in the High Court. .
The man is accused of between Friday January 29 and Saturday January 30, at Rosignol, he engaged in sexual intercourse with the girl, who is also a member of his church.
Hannibal, who has been a pastor for over 27 years, appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court. The matter was called three times where the committal statements were read. The pastor was given a chance to respond to the statements filed, but did not.
After perusing the evidence submitted via the statements, the Magistrate committed Pastor Hannibal to stand trial in the next session of the Berbice Criminal Court.
It is understood that the man was having an affair with the fourth form schoolgirl for some time, ever since she was in third form.
According to reports, the girl’s parents missed her one night and began inquiring about her whereabouts. They went looking for her, but were unsuccessful.
The man’s attorney had given a lengthy submission for bail and cited his good character.
Prosecutor Sergeant Althea Solomon had opposed bail on a number of grounds including, that the accused and victim lived in close proximity to each other and if granted bail there is a possibility that the accused will use his influence to tamper with witnesses.
After the matter was reported, the pastor was arrested and placed in custody and subsequently charged.
