The driver who is alleged to have struck down and killed an on duty traffic rank yesterday, appeared in
court to answer a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Ron Cole, 40, of 215 Blueberry Hill, Linden, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on April 11, last, at Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he drove motor pick-up GRR9355 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Nkosi LaFleur.
According to reports, LaFleur who was stationed at the Providence Police Station was directing traffic at Eccles when he stepped back to allow a vehicle to pass in front of him. That was when the pick-up hit him from behind.
The 25-year-old policeman died three days after the accident at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He was initially treated and sent away, but was rushed back to the hospital after complaining of severe pain.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded the defendant to prison after bail objections were made by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones. Jones pointed out the gravity of the charge and the penalty attached to the offence.
The Prosecutor told the court that at the time of the officer’s demise he was directing traffic when he was struck from behind by the vehicle. He added that a post mortem examination revealed that LaFleur’s died of haemorrhage.
Jones indicated that the police file is still incomplete.
Thereafter, the Magistrate suspended the driver’s licence of the accused and adjourned the matter until May 6.
