…12 years old in serious condition in hospital
A 12-year-old child is in a serious condition in the New Amsterdam Hospital after he was struck down by a car driven by a drunken driver in a street in the Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme. The driver subsequently fled the scene.
Injured is 12-year-old Vishkar Sookhu of Fort Ordnance, East Canje Berbice and a student of the Sheet Anchor Primary school.
The man, Yuvraj Singh, 20 of Adelphi Village, East Canje Berbice, who was driving motor car PGG 271 fled the scene after he struck the lad off his bicycle.
According to information around 12:50 hrs the lad who is due to write his SSEE within a week’s time was sent on an errand to the shop. The lad was returning home when he observed the car driven by Singh approaching at a fast rate of speed along the narrow streets through the much populated housing scheme. Even as the lad tried to take evasive action he was struck by the car.
The injured lad was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where he remains warded with lacerations about his body.
After striking the lad off his bicycle the drunken man fled the scene. However public spirited citizens gave chase and nabbed the man some five miles away at his home even as he tried to conceal the vehicle.
Singh was arrested and taken into custody, tested and found to be above the legal alcohol limit. He is in custody and charges are likely shortly.
