-urges local fans to support Canada U-23 game
Perhaps troubled by some negative feedbacks, Guyana born Canadian footballer Alex Bunbury held a Press Conference at the Guyana Football Federation to update on the Alex Bunbury Sports and Academics Academy’ (ABSAA) and to clear up any misconceptions about the initiative.

Bunbury, who was inducted into Canada’s football Hall of Fame, returned to the country of his birth for a nine-day visit during which time he intends to continue to engage the Government and prospective stakeholders with the aim of investing in the proposed Academy which according to him will offer more than football opportunities, but academics as well.
The former Canadian striker, who also held a profesional contract in Portugal, was accompanied by his brother and Senior Adviser Sam and President of the GFF Wayne Forde and he sought to quell an anxiety pertaining to whether the intended Project will become a reality.
According to Bunbury the Project is for the people of Guyana and while he conceded that he does not have all the answers he believes that the country is full of potential and yearning for a chance to showcase it.
“Football will benefit from the initiative, it is my first passion, but more importantly so the future of Guyana,” Bunbury told the gathering of reporters.
He said his intention is to make football much more than a game, a life lesson and a situation where we create jobs and give kids a safe environment to exist.
Bunbury informed that they intend to provide top notch coaches and educators for the Academy, notng that it is his way of giving back to the country of his birth.
Prompted for a response on the state of the discussions, Bunbury responded by saying that he will not do anything to jeopardize the talks, but offered to say that it has been positive.
Bunbury, whio is also the International Ambassador for football, disclosed that he was instrumental in the negotiations that will see Canada Under-23 play the Guyana ‘Golden Jaguars’ right here in Guyana.
He thanked all those who’ve playe a part in helping to promote and sell the initiative.
Meanwhile, Forde in his comments commended Bunbury for his efforts to bring Guyana into the 21st century of football, adding that the Project is a huge one which he hopes will not intimidate potential stakeholders, but rather will be able to attract them.
He referred to it as “bold and ambitious, but doable.”
Sam Bunbury in his remarks echoed the sentiments expressed by his brother when he stated that the Project is for the people of Guyana.
He spoke of the loss of two family members, a brother and sister within the space of five weeks and according to him, while the initiative is the primary focus, the deaths have made them even more determined to add a new dimension to their plans.
He said they now intend to add spotlight to health care, noting that even footballers need to stay healthy.
All three gentlemen urged the Guyanese football community to come out and support the national team when they play against a strong Canadian U-23 team, at the National Stadium.
