Defending Champions Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) made a sterling second half
comeback to defeat Vryman’s Erven Secondary (VESS) 3-2 to take top honours and win the final of the Annual Trinidad and Guyana Outreach U13 Inter school football competition in Berbice which was played in collaboration with the Hearts of Oak Masters Football club.
The final was played at the All Saints Scott Church ground, New Amsterdam, Berbice which was the venue for all of the matches. The lads from BEI staged a major comeback in the second half after being 2-0 down at half time.
They being champions in 2014, since the tournament was not held in 2015, the BEI team were outplayed in the first half as VESS came out attacking as Tyrese Ogelton and Cion Johnson found the back of the net.
In the second half it was a different story with BEI changing strategy and it was soon evident that the script would have been different. Attacking relentlessly the lads from BEI soon had three goals in the back of the nets as they completely dominated the tiring and hapless VESS team for the 3-2 win.
The players on target for BEI were Daniel Welcome, Keron Hamilton and Shamar Clements.
In the third place playoff Canje Secondary School (CSS) edged out Berbice High School (BHS) 3-2 on sudden death penalty kicks after full and extra time ended 0-0.
In the presentation ceremony that followed, BEI collected the T&G trophy and 15 gold medals, while VESS collected a trophy and 15 silver medals. Third place CSS and fourth place BHS also received trophies.
In the individual category Denilrick Griffith of VESS was the adjudged the best goalkeeper on show. The best defender award went to Nicholas Chase also of BEI, while the best midfielder was adjudged to be Shamar Clements. The most goal award was shared jointly between Tyrese Ogleton (VESS) and Keron Hamilton (BEI) with three goals each. They all received trophies as well as a jersey, a pair of hoses and a pair of shin pads.
The most promising player award went to Jamal Lyte of VESS and he received a medal as well as hose, shin pads and jersey.
The competition was sponsored by Isaac Daniel a resident of Trinidad and a regular visitor to Guyana who started to organise the activities over a decade ago.
The coordinators were former national players Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey and Kenrick Bowry along with Gandy “Blades” Sears of the Hearts of Oak Masters football club. (Samuel Whyte)
