Left arm spinner Keshram Seyhodan grabbed 5-46 as Demerara routed Berbice for 198 when the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand inter county three-day tournament commenced yesterday.
Raymond Perez and Ronaldo Renee have so far added 38 for the opening stand as Demerara closed the day in a somewhat comfortable position at Everest Cricket Club. Perez is not on 18 and Renee unbeaten on 11.
Skipper Ronaldo Mohamed justified his decision to insert Berbice by removing Adrian Sukwah (02), but Sasenarine Sookoo and Matthew Hardial added 46 for the second wicket before the introduction of spin separated them. Seyhodan disturbed the stumps of Hardial for 23 before Sherfene Rutherford trapped Joshua Harrichand lbw for 10 to leave Berbice at 51-3.
Seyhodan who bowled with control then picked up the wickets of Brandon Prasad (01) and Randy Wade (00) in quick succession as Berbice fell into difficulty at 66-5. Sookoo and Asif Ally featured in a six-wicket stand of 25, but leg spinner Ershad Ali ended their resistance by removing Sookoo for 45 which contained nine lovely timed fours. Ally was then caught and bowled by Seyhodan for two before Travis Persaud removed Vivehanda Jagit without scoring at 102-8.
However, Joel Seitaram and Nicholas Senarine provided stern resistance- the duo batted sensibly as they added 47 for the ninth wicket. Seitaram stood firm as he calmly dispatched the bad balls and was content to turn over the strike when it matters. Seenarine hit three fours and one six before he went for 25, but Seitaram batted well with last-man Raymond Vamkehil to add 49. The left-handed Seitaram who bought up his fifty off 96 balls was left unbeaten on 76 aided with four fours and a similar number of sixes while Vamkehil was lbw to Seyhodan for two. Shefene Rutherford took 2-46 while Mohamed, Ali and Persaud had one each.
Play continues at 09:30hrs today.
