Dear Editor,
Once up a time, there was a man whose name was Joseph Harmon, a then opposition member of Parliament, who joined the choir singing and leading the band of alleged corruption against the PPP/C Government.
Mr. Joseph Harmon, prior to 2015, was of the firm belief that it was “taboo”, in Guyana, to practice corruption. He sang the songs and hymns of corruption then but today he is dancing and waltzing his way into the very corrupt practices.
Allegations of corruptions topped Mr. Harmon’s agenda against the former government on his campaign trail, to which his coalition won the 2015 General and Regional Elections, with a promise to address corruption in Guyana in all its forms and ways with even a State Asset Recovery Unit established by the coalition government of which Mr. Joseph Harmon is the Hon. Minister of State.
Today it’s a crying shame and disbelief that the Minister of State is alleged to have been blamed for preventing the work of the Guyana Revenue Authority and the Special Organize Crime Unit officers who was on duty seeking to recover lost revenues to the government.
Mr. Harmon’s behavior is unpardonable and has no resting place in the Guyanese society. I chastize in the highest form of condemnation, the unbecoming behavior of the Minister of State. I urge the Minister to do the right and honourable thing, that is, to make a public apology to the Guyanese people in his capacity of the Minister of State.
Is Mr. Harmon’s Government being less transparent with the Guyanese people? Every abominable sin he once accused the former PPP Government of committing, those very sins and even more, is being embraced today by Mr. Harmon. In so doing, he is making the PPP look like angels before the eyes of the Guyanese public.
To have alleged placed a call to officers of GRA and SOCU carrying out their duty is to interfere with the work of state agencies which is political interference. It is clear that corruption is being condoned by the Minister of State. This bulldozer, without an operator, needs to be stopped before more immeasurable damages are done.
Is Mr. Harmon, the Hon. Minister of State, saying to the Guyanese people now that it is “not taboo” anymore to practice corruption in Guyana? How independent are State Agencies in the present government with these latest allegations of interferences?
In my opinion, the government of the day must move immediately to replace the State Asset Recovery Unit with an Anti-corruption Commission as the country’s final anti-corruption body.
