Turfites planning to attend the Georgetown Turf Club (GTC) April 24 Race Meet could find the return of the sport at the Mocha facility as exciting as years gone by.
With the dry weather allowing the organizers a good opportunity to prepare the track, they are predicting some fast races and conditions conducive for sprinters.
Kaieteur Sport paid a visit to the Mocha track on Saturday and spoke with Organiser Compton Sancho, who told this newspaper that fans returning to the GTC-organised Meet are in for a treat and expressed optimism that the day’s proceedings will see some enthralling races among the sixty-plus entries that have so far been confirmed.
Sancho, who is a very experienced Organiser and someone who has worked with all the major promoters of the sport locally, is assisting Michael Sims, the man responsible for sustaining the sport in Georgetown for a number of years, before a legal dispute over the ownership of the facility forced his migration to Canada.
He has however returned and is promising to vastly improve the current infrastructure for both turfites and owners so that the Mocha track could once again regain its past glory.
Meanwhile, as the day of reckoning draws closer a few owners speaking with Kaieteur Sport expressed elation about the return of Sims and were looking forward to a day of exciting rivalry among the respective stables.
According to a member of the Shocking Racing Stable, the GTC under Sims has once again open the door for horseracing in Georgetown and with the impending improvements likely to be made, the sport known as the ‘Sport of Kings’ could be a major attraction on the local calendar.
Sancho reminded that the GTC in 2000 staged the richest stakes race at that time and according to him, while the sport has improved in that area over the years with prize monies totaling in the millions for feature races, it is only a matter of time before the entity returns to that kind of footing that will allow it to offer substantial prizes to race winners.
Six races are carded for the day with the H & Lower over a distance of one mile classified as the feature event and among the horses registered is Glamour Queen.
The race carries prize monies worth close to $400,000 with the winner set to receive $200,000, runner-up $100,000, 3rd place $50,000 and 4th place $25,000 plus trophies.
The other races carded are the J & Lower over six furlongs; K & Lower over six furlongs; L & Lower over five furlongs; Unclassified and a cart horse race.
Among the sponsors on board are Banks DIH, Nand Persaud & Company, Kris Jagdeo Construction, Attorney-at-Law Poonai, Mohamed Salim Khan, Jumbo Jet Auto Sales, Denis DeRoop, Simply Royal Racing Stables, Justice Cecil Kennard and others.
Starting time is 13:00hrs.
