Fire of still unknown origin on Sunday morning completely ravaged the two storey wood and concrete house of contractor Clive Riddle and his wife Abigail Riddle at Lot 812, Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice.
The couple lost everything.
Mrs. Riddle, who is a food vendor, was at the New Amsterdam Market when she got the news.
Among the items destroyed were a refrigerator, freezer, washing machine, wardrobes, television, microwaves, suites, beds, wheelbarrows, pumps, generators, compressors and other carpentry equipment.
Mr. Riddle estimated his losses as over $20M
Giving an account of what may have occurred. Riddle stated that he was at Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, when he received a call that his house was on fire. By the time he arrived, the entire house was engulfed in flames.
He said that the fire service was already there.
From his understanding the fire began in the back room and quickly spread to the entire house.
The couple also reared chickens in a large pen at the back of the house, most of which were saved.
Riddle said that the situation is traumatizing and heartbreaking, but he is trusting in God for guidance.
The Guyana Fire Service responded with two tenders, but soon encountered a water shortage. According to residents, a fire tender (land rover) from the Rose Hall Estate also responded and did most of the work.
A posh two story concrete house next door sustained some damage.
