Residents of Kilcoy, Chesney, Fyrish and other surrounding areas on the Corentyne Coast came out in their numbers last Tuesday to protest the granting of a plot of land at Kilcoy to a businessman.
The lease, which is for 50 years, was signed by former President Donald Ramotar. It is dated January 27, 2015 and was issued jointly to Mohammed Alli (ID number 2172750 and Neri Alli (ID number 131668965). No address was given for the two individuals.
The 3.96 acres of land is described as Tract ‘MA’ being a portion of block four, Plantation Kilcoy, Corentyne, Berbice.
Speaking to the media Chairman of the Hampshire/ Kilcoy NDC Haseef Yusuf stated that one of the main contentions of the residents is the way that the process was done. According to the statutes, for any land to be distributed to anyone, the NDC in the area must first investigate as to ownership, if rates are paid. Yusuf stated that the NDC never gave permission for any land to be given to anyone. He said that neither the NDC nor the residents were informed that the land was leased.
From information gathered, Alli instead of going first to the NDC went directly to the Regional Administration which granted permission. The papers were then sent to The Lands and Survey Department which also granted permission.
It was signed by the former President on 27th January 2015.
The lease states that the document was granted for 50 years from 17-11 2014. However at the back of the document it was noted that the date 14th May 2014 was scratched and replaced with 14th May 2015. Some residents have suggested that police investigate the matter.
They claim that the land, which is situated next to a play field, was reserved for house lots. They want the lease revoked and the land given to them instead of Alli, who reportedly plans to develop a green house.
According to the residents, they were surprised when persons turned up and began fencing the area. A deep drain and a pond were then dug.
Residents are calling on the relevant authorities to intervene.
According to Yusuf, they also plan to file an injunction and write the RDC, the Lands and Survey Department and the Minister of Communities on the issue.
