Headquarters defeated Presidential Guard by 97 runs to capture the Commissioner of
Police DSM Seelall Persaud Birth Anniversary T20 title yesterday at Eve Leary.
Headquarters posted a challenging 203-4, batting first in front of a decent crowd. Troy Benn and Muniram Persaud gave Headquarters a dream start with an exciting 117-run opening stand. Both Batsmen showed little leniency for their opponents’ bowling as they mixed aggression with defence on a decent pitch. Muniram clobbered four fours and three sixes in top scoring with 56, while Benn smashed five fours and two maximums in his 51. Khalia Ramkaran and Steven Harris struck 39 each as Bissoondyal Roopchand picked up 2-56, Kester Hardcort 1-31 and Kevin Allicock 1-34.
Presidential Guard lost opener Allicock who was caught off Harris for two, but Zane London and Hardcort took the score to 54 with level-headed batting to keep their team in hunt. Troy Benn then removed Hardcort after he had slammed four fours in scoring 27 before Dwayne Dodson sent back London for 26 (4×4) to leave the score at 57-3. Despite a cameo 28 from Paul Tyndall who hit three fours and two sixes, Presidential Guard were bowled out for 106 in 19.3 overs mainly due to some steady bowling by Headquarters.
Man-of-the-match Benn was the leading wicket taker with 4-13, while Harris claimed 2-28, Bowam Ramkarran 1-16 and Dodson 1-21.
Randolph Knights (best catch), Harris (most sixes-nine), Benn (best bowler in the final), Persaud (best batsman in the final and MVP) were all rewarded for their efforts. Stephon Blacks was the tournament leading run scorer with 85 runs.
Chairman of the cricket section of the Guyana Police Force Nigel Hoppie congratulated the winners and thanked the other participating teams, while Sports Officer Tiffany Williams expressed gratitude to the sponsors. The competition was sponsored by Zara Group of Companies.
Meanwhile, Headquarters overcame Training School 2-1 to win the 5-a-side football competition. Natasha Alder who won the MVP and Onica Eastman found the net for the winners.
