Dear Editor,
Stabroek News, Saturday 2016-04-09 carried a letter by Mr. Donald Ramotar which greatly criticized the forensic audits, compared the present governance with the past PNC regime with regards to racism, nepotism, and dictatorial actions. That it has come from such an individual, in my opinion, is being shameless to the highest level.
The article began be declaring that the audits have not produced any evidence of substance. This is a premature utterance. These audits have revealed discrepancies of all descriptions and actions have already been undertaken to make corrections in accounting systems. Some more work has to be done to these audits so that legal actions could be taken. Very soon this will come to fruition. Part of the letter states that “audits are proving that corruption was never a problem.” This is an insult to the intelligence of all Guyanese. In fact the exposure of the level of corruption involving contracts and some foreign investors has caused the PPP government an election.
First and foremost the auditors are persons of integrity and impartiality whose agenda is not to victimize anyone because of personal dislikes or other prejudicial factors. The second thing I would like to mention is that some CEOs in question have given defence or/ and have credible persons explaining and defending for them. Most of them in so doing have brought their judgement into questioning. If one to ten is given for these responses hardly any would reach five. Not going the route of having explanation/ response is avoiding an exercise in futility.
When I read that the present government is involved in racism a few incidents in the past came to mind. Genivieve Nedd of Education and Lucille Griffith of IRD weren’t considered as racial victimization? It is also hard to explain how a statement could be made by the past government that Blacks are not qualified for ambassadorial positions. Mr. Editor, the ex- president is au-fait with these facts and should avoid ridiculous utterances.
Dictatorial maneuvering was the hallmark of the PPP administrations. Even though his government had a minority, Mr. Ramotar prorogued Parliament and killed democracy in Guyana for a prolonged period. Only international condemnation and shame forced him into election.
When Mr. Ramotar vowed not to assent to any bills of the Opposition even though they were in the majority one could have envisaged dictatorship at its peak. How could you accuse a government of being dictatorial when your government conducted a lie detector test at G.E.A. and sent home some who failed the test and keep some who also failed the test and had special immunity?
Providing jobs for “the boys” was one of the malicious acts of the present government according to the article. It is a known fact by now that they are many dysfunctional persons holding key positions all because of political patronage. These persons are still loyal to the previous administration and so do not give the kind of support to the present regime. When adjustments are made to correct this situation there is a big cry of witch hunting. In addition to this nothing is wrong with the government putting its people in key positions so that it programmes could be better executed. It happen all over the world when there is a change in government. Why should the PPP cry when they were guilty of doing the same?
In conclusion there seems to be an orchestrated force to use all means to make the government looks bad and create disenchantment. The government should not be cowed into a position of submission. Boldly steps should be taken so that the original intended results of the government could be achieved.
