Skipper Keemo Paul struck a fluent 85, while left arm spinner Akenie Adams picked up three
quick wickets to give Essequibo the upper hand against Berbice when the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand three-day inter county U19 tournament continued yesterday at Enterprise.
When play started at 10:45 hrs due to rain, a loss of 19 overs in the day’s play, Essequibo resumed on their overnight 71-2 and posted 246 before they were bowled out in the second session.
Paul and Sachin Persaud who began the day on 25 and eight respectively extended their third wicket stand to 119 before Persaud was caught by wicket-keeper Ritesh Umroa for 17. Nevertheless, Paul batted brilliantly, mixing aggression with defence as he anchored his team innings in hazy condition. He was quick to take advantage to anything wayward and drove off-spinner Asif Ally to the cover boundary a few times before smashing him for two sixes. The elegant right-hander then took boundaries off Joel Seetaram before spanking Joshua Harrichand for consecutive fours to reach his half century in fine fashion.
Paul continued to gather his runs with relative ease as he and Akenie Adams frustrated their opponents with level-headed batting before Paul was caught on the stroke of lunch for 85; he faced 85 balls and smashed ten fours and two sixes. Ally picked up a few quick wickets to restrict Essequibo somewhat, but Adams batted well before he was caught off Brandon Prasad for 32. However Siddique Mohamed who remained unbeaten on 21 held the lower order; he shared in useful partnerships with Riaz Khan (10) and Dwayne Thomas who scored 25. Prasad claimed 2-25, Seeteram 2-63 and Ally 2-88.
Paul uprooted the stumps of Trevon Caesar (00) and had Adrian Sukwah
(04) caught at the wicket as Berbice reply got off to a terrible start at 4-2. Harrichand and Matthew Hardial took the score to 49 before Adams had the former caught by wicket-keeper Nathan Persaud for 14. Adams then bowled Seetaram (00) and had Prasad (12) taken at the wicket to leave Berbice at 57-5. But Hardial and Ritesh Umora safely negotiated the remaining overs as their team closed on 71-5 with Hardial on 33 (3×4) and Omroa on two. Adams has 3-14 and Paul 2-7.
