Dear Editor,
I am trying my level best to reconcile what was reported via the media with what actually may have taken place. Point in question is the reporting in Kaieteur News April 9, of the mishap of young Special Constable Akeem Hyles, who drowned while carrying out an operation to halt illegal mining at Kaieteur National Park. Permit me at this juncture before proceeding further to offer the family my condolences on the tragic loss of their son.
However, there are some areas in the reporting that does evoke an element of startling surprise, strike a discord with one’s emotions, upset humane level balance forcing any sane, level thinking homo sapiens to seriously question, if not challenge the modus operandi of the Guyana Police Force. Point of reference being the mention that the other occupants managed to turn the boat upright and then continued their journey after failing to locate Hyles. What duration of time post-mishap was allotted to the search for this hapless victim? Who participated in the search, and whose decision it was to abandon the search after failing to locate the suspected drowned?
What position did Constable Hyles maintain in the boat prior to the mishap? Based on the nature of the operation which called for aquatic intervention/ manipulation, was the young Constable not appropriately bedecked for the task at hand, namely at basic level the wearing of a lifejacket. To further compound or add insult to injury of this ship of fools, the Commander of F Division Mr. Budram stated that according to the report he received the boat hit a rock and went down, and one rank could not be accounted for.
Incidentally at this point my tolerance level also sank, further lowered by his next statement that he could not say how many persons were in the vessel. What and how much did he actually know, that his utterances failed to show? Let us not forget that the nation had a similar demise a few months ago when another rank and his wife were killed in a traffic accident during a sting operation, clearly due to right hand not knowing what left hand was all about. I am calling on the Minister to leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of this investigation and dealing condignly with all responsible parties, whom I am certain was much older and senior to the one whose life was snatched away in its prime. In addition to put in place measure to prevent such a recurrence in any form or shape, for while his body lay under the water his buddies failed to treat him as they “oughta.”
