A 20-year-old motorcyclist lost his life Tuesday night after he collided with a horse on the Mocha Access
Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The horse also died in the accident which occurred a little after 22:00 hrs.
The dead man has been identified as Shemroy Anthony Cave, a Banks DIH employee of Diamond New Scheme, EBD.
According to information, Cave was heading to his girlfriend’s home when he collided with the animal.
His father, Shemroy John, in an interview yesterday said that he last spoke with his son around 21:00 hrs on Tuesday when the youth left his home to go to his grandmother’s residence where he lived.
“Around 10:00 (PM) I called his phone to ask if he reached home and someone answer and tell me that he was involved in an accident,” John explained.
He said that he immediately went to the scene where he saw his son’s dead body on the roadway. The 20-year-old was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead.
His girlfriend, Lisa Williams, confirmed that the dead man was heading to her home when the accident occurred.
She said that around 20:00hrs, Cave called and informed her that he was at his father’s residence and that he would drop in by her after leaving there. He did not tell her what time he would he going by her.
According to Williams, a little after 23:00 hrs, she received a call from a friend who informed her that Cave collided with a horse on the roadway and died as a result of the accident.
Williams said that she last saw Cave on Friday.
The young woman revealed that a lot of accidents occur on the Mocha Access Road because there are no lights there.
She recalled one accident similar to the one in which her boyfriend was killed. In December 2014, Stefan Henry, 23, died after he collided with a horse on the Mocha Access Road.
According to reports received, Henry went to drop off his niece in Sophia and was returning home when he collided with the horse. He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he succumbed.
In that incident, the horse also died.
Residents in the area are calling on the government to install street lights since they claimed that these unfortunate incidents will continue to happen if the area remains dark at night.
“You always have animals here. If it is not horse, is cows and these animals does jump right out at you so we need lights in here,” one resident said yesterday.
