Dear Editor,
I was still in embryonic stage when Legendary West Indies Captain Clive Lloyd won two World Cups in 1974 and 1978 respectively. He then returned to his homeland on both occasions to a heroes’ welcome and even paraded to different parts of the country including on the Essequibo Coast, with the coveted trophy as I was told. Could the Government or the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) replicate a similar reception for our current World Cup winning heroes? Instead the women were humiliated at the airport upon their return, while the under 19 players had a low key reception when compared to their colleagues from the other territories.
It simply boggles the mind just how some of our administrators can ill-advisedly mis-time the significance and magnitude of our sportsmen and women’s achievements. I would never be removed from the emotional captivation and excitement whenever I am told of those moments of nationalistic pride as Clive Lloyd held aloft the symbol of world supremacy. This is indeed an opportunity to repeat history with the nation once the authorities have the vision to do so.
At present though, the GCB has been on the defensive and must immediately attempt at spinning the coin of grandeur for our champions, notwithstanding the gala dinner that was hosted for them recently. They deserve more as was humorously even though boldly stated by one of the female players at the event. Additionally the Government shall honour those stars during the celebrations of the country’s golden jubilee anniversary.
The timing is right for the advancement of West Indies cricket and every opportunity must be grasped at winning each moment. This is indeed quite an historic sequence of sporting invincibility for the people of the Caribbean, a monumental feat that will be unmatched for a long time to come. Congratulations to our heroes who are most deserving of a special moment of nationalistic glory. Hoping we may witness a motorcade or exhibition matches organized by the GCB whereby the fans can savour the moment with our champions.
