Police arrested eight Dominicans suspected to be sex workers, in a house at Bartica last Monday.
They were arrested after police received information that some of them may have arrived here illegally while the others overstayed their time.
The women were taken into custody when police raided the house after receiving information that they had been residing at the location for a few days.
Police believed that the women might have been working in the interior as sex workers and would have left there some time last week to spend some time and shop in Bartica.
A police source said that the women barely spoke English so it was difficult for ranks to conduct an interview. They were taken to Police Headquarters for further questioning.
Kaieteur News understands that at least one woman claimed that she was tricked to come here. “It was difficult to understand what they were saying. They know a little English and with that we tried to understand them,” a police said.
Investigations are ongoing.
